Meals with friends
MEALS WITH FRIENDS
As a church, we want to keep building community together, whether you’ve been at St Luke’s for weeks or years!
To help make connections with newer friends, we’re organising some social meals - just let us know whether you’d like to host a meal or prefer to go to a meal, and we’d love to connect you with others.
To keep it simple, we’re suggesting two options on the same weekend - choose either a Saturday dinner (15 Nov), or Sunday lunch (16 Nov).
BOOKINGS CLOSED
Belonging - Lunch
Coming to a new church is a big thing!
Whether you are new to faith, have been in church all your life or not for a while, ‘Belonging’ is a chance to learn more about St Luke’s and how things work. As well as hearing more about the vision that drives us, this is a great way to meet others and ask all your questions. When you’re ready, you’ll have the opportunity to explore ways to serve and consider joining a Community Group.
Join us for Belonging on Sunday 15th December, 12pm-2pm (lunch included).
If you’re new or newish with us, and considering calling St Luke’s ‘home’ we would love to see you there. Please RSVP below.

Quotes from past attendees:
“I was really encouraged and really enjoyed meeting up with our dear sisters. It was a wonderful way to refresh and encourage each other and to be reassured how we all fit into God’s beautiful story. Such a great initiative to bring us all together. And the band was amazing!”
“Any women's event with great coffee and portugese tarts and fantastic teaching is pretty much nailing it. Everyone should come to Refresh.”
“Loved how many women were there and getting to know new people I hadn’t met.”
Christianity Explored
Jesus never held political office, never wrote a book, never married, and never travelled the world - but in spite of all odds, is the most famous person in history. Why!?
Join us - or bring a friend - for this five-session course exploring the identity of Jesus Christ, and the life and hope that he offers us all.
You can get a taste at the Intro Night on Wed 20th Aug.
Workshop: Answering questions
Most Christians want to share their hope in Jesus with others, but often worry about the difficult questions we might be asked in response. At this evening workshop, Rev Dr Michael Jensen will share a framework to encourage and empower you to answer questions with grace.
Michael is the author of many books including 'My God, My God – Is it possible to believe anymore?' and is the Rector of St Mark's, Darling Point.
RSVP essential.
'Away Together' Weekend
We’re so excited to be going Away Together. It’ll be a fantastic time to connect as a whole church, relax with friends, enjoy engaging Bible talks, recharge in creation (with epic Lake Mac sunsets!) and have some fun together.
Click on the link below for all the information.
A conversation about Easter
Join us for a relaxed evening of wine, cheese and conversation about the message and hope of Easter.
Dave will get us started with a few reflections from the short book, Happily ever after: How Easter can change your life for good. And there will be time for questions or reflections about the hope of Easter, the history behind it, and difference it makes.
If you didn’t receive a copy of the book at Easter and would like one, please let us know in your RSVP below.
Wed 7 May, 7.45pm, with drinks/supper provided (incl non-alcoholic options).

‘Sharing your hope’ - Cohort
Sharing your hope is a new initiative to help you get a little bit better at sharing your hope in Jesus.
The apostle Peter encourages every Christian to be ‘ready to give an answer for the hope that you have’ (1 Pet 3:15), but there are lots of reasons that most Christians find this hard: we don’t know where to start, our friends don’t seem interested, we’re worried about tricky questions, and more.
This year we’re launching ‘Sharing your hope’ as a pilot project (which will be led by Dave). It’s not an event, but a “learning cohort”, a group of us who’ll try to learn together, to get a little bit better at sharing our faith.
Part 1 - The hope of the gospel - a paper to read, and workshop to discuss. Sun 23 March, 1pm-2.30pm, at St Luke’s.
Part 2 - Telling your story - a workshop (possibly online) about how to share your story, and then a workshop to practise and help each other.
Part 3 - Answering questions - Tues 12 Aug - a workshop with Dr Michael Jensen about ‘apologetics’ - how to answer those tough questions in a way that commends the truth of the gospel.

Christmas in July with friends
We love doing life together at St Luke’s. So to help us continue to intentionally deepen relationships with one another we’re running “meals with friends” again. But this year we have given it a Christmas in July twist!
On Saturday 27 July we’re going to gather together over a meal in homes and celebrate Christmas in July with friends. It is a chance to bring out your favourite Christmas jumper, play some Christmas music, have fun and most of all continue to get to know one another.
All the meals are happening on the same night. You can sign up either to host or attend (and bring something to share). And choose between an earlier (5pmish) or later (7pmish) dinner slot.
Note: Bookings for this event have now closed. Hosts and guests will be allocated by Friday 19 July.
History & Hope with Dr Sarah Stonebraker
History and Hope
Why our culture of self-invention needs an anchor in the past - and how the Christian story can help.
Join us for a special evening with Dr. Sarah Irving-Stonebraker:
Date: Wed 24 July
Time: 6.30pm Canapés | 7pm Address and Q&A | 8pm Finish
Venue: St Catherine’s School Chapel, Waverley
Cost: Adults $15 (inc. refreshments and light canapés). Highschool students free (on registration).
All welcome
Jointly hosted by St Luke’s and St Catherine’s
Speaker
Dr. Sarah Irving-Stonebraker is Associate Professor of History in the Western Civilisation Program at Australian Catholic University in North Sydney. Sarah was educated at Wenona, then attained her Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Sydney with First Class Honours, and was awarded the University Medal in 2003. She holds a PhD from Cambridge University and was then a Junior Research Fellow at Oxford University. Her first book “Natural Science and the Origins of the British Empire” won the Royal Society of Literature Award for Nonfiction.
Topic
Contemporary culture holds that life is about self-invention and self-fulfilment; the past has little to teach us. We live in an “Ahistoric Age” in which we are profoundly disconnected from history - and our obsession with the novel has unintended consequences. However, there is hope to be found in the Christian story. Drawing upon her expertise as an academic historian and her experience as an atheist who has become a Christian, Irving-Stonebraker presents a positive vision for history and for inhabiting the historic, biblical Christian faith which gives us hope in a rootless age.
Venue
St Catherine’s School Chapel, Waverley
Enter via Gate 3, Albion Street - or via Gate 6, Macpherson St (the Performing Arts & Aquatic Centre) and take stairs/lift to Level 3 and through to the Chapel.
