John Chrysostom (known in the early church as ‘goldenmouth’) … a fair chance
Martin Luther King’s I have a dream sermon? … certainly memorable!
Billy Graham’s 1959 Sydney crusade? … a big one for us locals
Jonathan Edwards’ Sinners in the hands of an angry God? (preached by Mark Dever) … famous but still no
Charles Spurgeon … a strong possibility
The Sermon on the Mount … absolutely!
This Sunday at St Luke’s we begin a new series looking at Matthew chapters 5 through 7, better known as the ‘Sermon on the Mount’. It is surely the greatest sermon ever preached, coming from the Lord Jesus himself — although a close second would be the Sermon on the Plain in Luke 6:17-49 that shares similar material.
It is Jesus’ blueprint for a new community, the community that he is gathering through his preaching of the inbreaking Kingdom of heaven, the community of his disciples & followers. A new community with a new heart. A counter-cultural community that is salt & light. A radical community that seeks first God’s kingdom above all else. Prepare to be challenged & changed, as we listen to Jesus preach the greatest sermon in history.
Daily bible reading notes will be available on Sunday 7th Feb.
Sunday sermons from the series can be found here, as they become available.
